Angela Davis, Erykah Badu celebrates Malcom X posthumous birthday

by Duke Magazine

Yesterday, May 19, would have been the 95th birthday of Malcom X. But, prominent figures in the society didn’t pass bye without commemorating the fearless speaker that changed the fate of civil rights movement to include disruption and resistance.

Malcolm X lived his life to change the narrative of how African descents are treated in all purviews of human endeavor. He was committed to destroy all barricades put in place to keep Blacks at a demeaning bay and their voices quiet.

Amid the incessant fatal police raids, public lynchings, and resentment for the mentally challenged that is the order of the day in some parts of America and Europe, the evergreen teachings and philosophy of Malcom X are still of huge relevance even 55 years after his assassination.

Malcom X is gone, but his legacy speaks volume for him. It is to this end that his family, with his daughter professor and author, Ilyasah Shabazz, marked his posthumous birthday with a virtual celebration of his well spent life by having notable personalities on standby to watch the remarkable event live on Facebook and Instagram. The event themed “A Tribute In Word and Sound” which was premiered featured speakers like Dr. Angela Davis, Rev. Al Sharpton, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Jidenna, Common, Erykah Badu, and others sharing the inspiring stances of Malcom X on today’s generation. The commemorating event was spiced up with a special DJ tribute via Instagram Live that was led by Hip hop legend Pete Rock.
