by Duke Magazine

Coates G Contracting LLC is a Black family-owned construction firm that is making waves in the United States. Darrell K. Choates, Sr., his father, his son, and his grandson — that is four generations — are the owners of the firm headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, according to Black News.

Choates has more than four decades of experience in the construction industry and as CEO, he has helped his firm win multi-million dollar contracts.

The company is a certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), according to Black News, and since its inception, has managed large-scale contracts, constructed senior living residences, and provided technologically advanced SaaS platforms creating Smart Cities.

Recently, the company scored seven new multi-million dollar contracts including a $30 million construction project at JFK Airport’s Terminal 1 in New York City and a $25 million construction project in Ghana, Black News reported.

In 2011, Choates was named Minority Contractor of the Year and in 2015 and 2016, he was a Best of Philly award recipient. Choates remains affiliated with the National Association of Minority Contractors and Faith-Based Crime Prevention, and he is the president of both groups, according to Black News.

“Mr. Choates is most proud to have protected the legacy of his company as a strong minority-managed organization. Likewise, he has served the region of Philadelphia as the owner of a registered nonprofit community organization, Logan Community Enterprise Center, which among other non-profit activities sponsors bi-weekly food drives,” a press statement celebrating the legacy of Choates said.

The statement also added that the Choates Family of Companies is expanding its mission to care for the sick and elderly with Personal Care Home C&G. It has also launched a telemedicine platform Heart Beat Health Care to provide support amidst the pandemic.

“It has also collaborated with Mobi Technology, an Israeli firm, to provide “Smart City” solutions for such endemic issues as traffic gridlock, emergency communication, and crime tracking,” according to the statement.
