Brief Profile: Adewale Tinubu

Jubril Adewale Tinubu is a Nigerian seasoned entrepreneur in the oil and gas sector. He is the Group Chief Executive of Oando Plc, one of sub-Saharan Africa’s pace setting agglomerate of energy groups. Adewale bagged his first degree in Law from University of Liverpool, England, before proceeding to hold a masters in Law from London School of Economics. He started practicing his Law career with his  family law firm, K. O. Tinubu and Co. as an attorney in 1992, with expertise in corporate and petroleum law fields. Adewale went on to co-founded Ocean & Oil Group, a oil company located in Nigeria in 1994. 

The thriving Ocean & Oil company in 2000 acquired the then Unipetrol during the Federal Government of Nigeria’s privatization exercise, and this great strides projected the company to buy the then Agip which was later rebranded to today’s Oando Plc. Oando Plc has broaden its business horizon to become the leading oil and gas retailer in Nigeria.

Oando has subsequently tweaked  its business model to become an integrated energy solutions provider cutting across downstream, midstream and upstream operations.

Adewale championed the outstanding success of Oando Plc to acquire $1.7 billion worth ConocoPhillips Nigeria’s business operations in 2014. 

Adewale sixteen years of leadership with his team has diligently apposition the company on the crescendo of successful energy service provider.

 It is the only Nigerian energy company that is actively involved in all sectors of the petroleum economy as well as being the first African company to have an international listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. 

As a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, he sits on the board of several blue-chip companies and NGOs as Chairman or Director including the board of Victims Trust Fund for Internally Displaced Persons.

Adewale’s adept experience and contribution to the world of oil and gas has availed him much recognition and awards. These are; The King of African Oil by Forbes magazine; One of the Top Ten CEOs in the world by ASKMEN; Young global leader by the World Economic Forum (2007); African Business Leader of the Year by Africa Investor (2011); Leadership Business Person of the Year 2014; Africa Executive of the Year by Oil Council (2015); Entrepreneur of the Year West Africa by Ernst & Young (2015).
