Duke’s Man Crush Monday: Nick Mutuma

Nicholas Munene Mutuma is a Kenyan actor, producer, television/radio host, model and a corporate MC.

 

He was born on September 22,1988 at Meru, Kenya but he grew up in Dar es Salaam where he had his primary school education at the International School of Tanganyika and completed his high-school at Braeside School, Nairobi.

 

Nick began his career, participating in school plays and in 2005, he joined States International University Africa, where he bagged a Bsc in International Business Administration, 2010.

 

His debut into the Kenyan television was in 2008 when he was cast for the character Luka, a young naïve college student living in poverty, who gets involved with an older woman, a “sugar mummy”. Although the role got a mixed review from the viewers.

 

Still in 2008, he also featured in M-Net’e first Pan-African drama series Changes, directed by Tosh Gitonga as Richard, a young man who learns that he was kidnapped from the hospital after being born.

 

His break-out role came in 2008 when he was casted for the drama series Shuga. He is also the only one among the Shuga cast that featured in all five seasons. Nick starred the 2014 Zuku series, State House and in 2016, he the role of Tomide in the hit Nigerian online series This is It, created, written and directed by Dolapo Adeleke (LowlaDee). This Is It received an AMVCA Nomination 2018 for Best TV Series.

 

In 2018, Mutuma starred in Kenyan RomCom Disconnect, directed by Tosh Gitonga. The movie premiered across theatres nationwide on 21 April 2018. Also in 2018, Nick joined the cast of Skinny Girl in Transit in the fifth season and in 2019, he directed his first movie called You Again.

 

In 2021, he produced and directed the Kenyan romantic comedy film Sincerely Daisy, also distributed by Netflix.

 

He was recruited in 1FM events department in 2012 and worked briefly as the station’s promotions coordinator before he got promoted to events manager. Upon the discovery of his love for radio, he hosted popular radio show The Chill Spot on 91.5 Hits from 2013 to 2015 when he decided to leave the show to give acting his full gaze but returned in 2014 as the new host of Africa Magic’s premier Lifestyle TV show Mashariki Mix. The show which ranked third on Africaranking.com most-watched African TVs shows in 2015. He has also hosted the Africa Magic Viewers Choice awards red carpet (2014), the AMVCA nomination night (2014), popular game show Zindua Chapaa (2015), a TV lottery show in Kenya, among others.

 

In 2013, Nick released his first single, “254 anthem”, a rap/kapuka-infused song that celebrated all things good about Kenya. The track received mixed reactions alongside critiques from fans. However, in September 2014, Nick released a follow-up single, “That Life”, featuring Cool Kid Taffie.

 

Nick was ranked on Actors.co.ke as the second among the “top ten sexy actors in Kenya”, the second on the “Top ten Kenyan male actors” by mwakilishi.com and the sexiest Kenyan man by homeboyzradio website. In 2013, he ranked as the highest-paid actor in Kenya.

 

Upon the birth of his daughter in 2018, Nick and actress cum entrepreneur, Bridget Shighadi decided to move in together.
