Percy Maimela: Guinness World Record Holder For Largest Coffee Sketch In The World

Percy Maimela is a South African artist who won a spot in the Guinness World Record after his successful creation of the largest mosaic made from coffee.

He created a picture of his compatriot, DJ Black Coffee, using nothing but ground coffee in what is now an impressive feat.

The coffee sketch was exhibited for a few days at Sandton City before being moved, This Is Africa reported.

“This was my first experiment with coffee and it came out perfect. I love what I do, whatever goes on in my mind it’s magic, I actually talk to the art, but I couldn’t because it’s public,” Maimela stated of his achievement to eNCA.

According to Channel 24, Maimela delved into the art without a formal qualification from his retail business which was seen as a risky deviation.

The artist completed his picture on a 5×5 meter canvas on the sheet that was 100% covered in the ground coffee with zero negative space to win the prestigious Guinness World Record title in 2019.

Maimela dedicated his achievement and the global feat to every South Africans that are still afraid of pursuing their dreams, hoping that this will urge them to go all out and excel.

According to MSN, Maimela explained that “It’s not about me. It’s about all of us using our potential to create what we can. I am an artist but someone else might be a soccer player. If you’re a soccer player, for example, focus on what you’re doing and ensure you’re enjoying it”. 

Right from a very young age, Maimela has had a keen interest in art, growing that interest by constantly practising through painting, trying out pencil and pen drawings, as well as, paper mache.

Maimela was the recipient of the 2019 South African Men of the Year Awards in the category of Arts and Culture of the Year.
