Necessity is the mother of invention, just as the cliché goes. As many countries of the world are initiating varying ideas of fighting the coronavirus pandemic to a halt, technological advancement is undoubtably the leveraging tool to manage the ravaging world back to its state of rest. The need to contain the spread of COVID-19, and giving effective treatment to its patients birthed the use of robots to attend to coronavirus patients.

Rwanda has officially on Tuesday deployed five high tech robots which will be assisting doctors and frontline workers in the country’s combat against the novel coronavirus.

The five high-tech anti â€“ epidemic robots, which have been christened with Rwandan names, Urumuri, Icyizere, Kazuba, Ngabo and Mwiza, will be fully employed to appropriately manage the treatment of COVID-19 in the designated Rwandan treatment centers.

The robots have been handed over to the Ministry of Health by the Ministry of ICT and Innovation in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Rwanda at Kanyinya Treatment Centre where work has already began.

The Minister of Health, Dr Daniel Ngamije, said that because of their capabilities, the robots will increase timeliness and efficiency in fighting COVID–19 as well as reduce exposure of health workers to possible infection of the pandemic.
