Nigerian Singer and Songwriter, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun professionally known as Wizkid is a year older today.
Wizkid was born on July 16,1990 in Surulere, Lagos to an Islamic father and a pentecostal christian mother. Wizkid who narrated that his father married three wives has 12 female siblings.
He started recording music at the age of 11 and released a collaborative album with a group called The Glorious Five. The group comprised himself and a couple of his church friends.
Wizkid signed a record deal with Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment, E.M.E in 2009 and rose to fame after releasing ” Holla at Your Boy”, the lead single from his debut studio album, “Superstar” in 2011.
In February 2014, Wizkid became the first Nigerian musician to ever have over one million followers on Twitter.
Notably, in 2021, Wizkid ranked the most streamed Nigerian artist of all time on Spotify, with over 3.4 billion streams.
He however, mentioned Naeto C as one of the people who mentored and tutored at age 15.
Wizkid attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School. And proceeded to Lagos State University, LASU but dropped out mid 2009. He later attended Lead University but also dropped out after two sessions.
Wizkid is not just locally accepted, he has greatly advanced to collaborating with international music artists like Rihanna, Drake, Chris Brown, Beyonce, Akon, among others.
Following Wizkid’s featuring in Drake’s afro-beat infused “One Dance”, Wizkid on April 5, 2016 became the first Nigerian artist to be listed on Billboards Twitter and it lasted for 24 hours.
For his notable works and excellent performance, Wizkid has won quite a number of award such as the Grammy Award for Best Music Video on Beyoncé’s ” Brown Skin Girl” where he was a lead artist. This however his first ever Grammy Award. He is also the most awarded African artist with 3 in BET Awards, 3 in Soul Train Awards, 3 in Billboard Awards, 2 in iHeartRadio Music Awards and 6 in MOBO Awards. He also received the ASCAP plaque for his songwriting contributions to Drake’s “One Dance” which earned him two Guinness World Records as the song became the first to reach one billion streams on Spotify. It was also the most streamed song on Spotify at the time.
Wizkid in 2019 was rated as one of the top 100 most influential Africans by New African Magazine. He is also the most awarded artist in The Headies Award history. In November 2021, he was declared by Apple Music Awards as the winner of Artist of the year(Africa).
